{"id":5658,"date":"2025-06-10T12:43:59","date_gmt":"2025-06-10T12:43:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/foodsafety4africa.eu\/?p=5658"},"modified":"2025-08-20T14:15:37","modified_gmt":"2025-08-20T14:15:37","slug":"wfsd-2025-symposium","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/foodsafety4africa.eu\/fr\/wfsd-2025-symposium\/","title":{"rendered":"WFSD: Highlights from the 2025 World Food Safety Day Symposium"},"content":{"rendered":"<p data-start=\"242\" data-end=\"704\">On the occasion of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/campaigns\/world-food-safety-day\/2025\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\"><strong>World Food Safety Day 2025<\/strong><\/a>, four EU-funded initiatives \u2014 <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/fci4africa.eu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">FCI4Africa<\/a>, FoodSafety4Africa, <a href=\"https:\/\/healthyfoodafrica.eu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">HealthyDiets4Africa<\/a><\/strong>, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/uprisefoodsafety.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\"><strong>Uprise Food Safety Project<\/strong><\/a> \u2014 came together to host the <em><strong>\u201cWorld Food Safety Day Symposium for Next Gen Food Safety Practitioners.\u201d<\/strong><\/em> With <strong>over 150 registrations<\/strong>, this online gathering, held on 4 and 5 June, brought into sharp focus the vital role of science, policy, and collaborative innovation in strengthening food safety systems across Africa.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"706\" data-end=\"1310\">The Symposium opened with a welcome from moderator <strong>Dr. Fadel Ndiame<\/strong> of <a href=\"https:\/\/foodsafety4africa.eu\/fr\/partners\/fsts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Food Systems Transformation Solutions<\/strong><\/a> in South Africa, who set the scene by emphasising the need to build more resilient, equitable, and science-informed food systems, followed by a powerful keynote address by <strong>Dr. Amare Ayalew<\/strong> of the <a href=\"https:\/\/au.int\/en\/commission\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\"><strong>African Union Commission<\/strong><\/a>. A major highlight was the presentation by FS4Africa\u2019s coordinator, <strong>Dr. Titilayo Falade<\/strong> from the <a href=\"https:\/\/foodsafety4africa.eu\/fr\/partners\/iita\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Institut International d'Agriculture Tropicale (IITA)<\/a> in Nigeria. Her intervention illustrated how FS4Africa is tackling food safety challenges in informal markets, which account for a significant portion of food trade and consumption across the continent. By focusing on risk assessment, participatory training, and context-adapted technology, FS4Africa is equipping key actors in the food chain with the tools and knowledge to improve food safety on the ground.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2411\" data-end=\"2848\">A compelling panel discussion brought together experts from the <strong>European Commission<\/strong>, the <strong>African Continental Association for Food Protection<\/strong>, and project representatives from across Europe and Africa. Each project showcased in greater detail the scope of its work, sharing findings, visualisations, and stories of innovation from the field. FS4Africa\u2019s session stood out for its focus on grassroots engagement and its emphasis on co-creating knowledge platforms with African partners. The project\u2019s beta Knowledge Platform, launched just ahead of the event, is already serving as a key resource for food safety practitioners working in and with African contexts.\u00a0<\/span><strong style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Aboudou Azim Bolal\u00e9<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400;\"> from the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture and National University of Agriculture (Republic of Benin) presented his research on the <\/span><em style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Integrated strategies to reduce pesticides residues in cereal and legume grains: a pathway to comprehensive management in Benin Republic&#8221;<\/em><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400;\">, while\u00a0<\/span><strong style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Buba Daffeh<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0(<\/span><a style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400;\" href=\"https:\/\/foodsafety4africa.eu\/fr\/partners\/ege\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Egerton University Kenya<\/strong><\/a><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400;\">) showcased findings on\u00a0<\/span><em style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Effects of Aflatoxin Inhibiting Technologies on the productivity of groundnuts in Elgeiyo-Marakwet and Baringo Counties, Kenya&#8221;<\/em><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400;\">. Lastly,\u00a0<\/span><strong style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Sylvia Baah-Tuahene<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0from Science and Technology Policy Research Institute (CSIR-STEPRI) presented her research on\u00a0<\/span><em>&#8220;Aflatoxin Mitigation and Adoption Barriers in Ghana\u2019s Groundnut Sector&#8221;<\/em><span style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h6 data-start=\"2850\" data-end=\"3397\">Next Generation Leadership for Safer Food Systems<\/h6>\n<p data-start=\"3399\" data-end=\"3721\">The event concluded with closing remarks by <strong>Dr. Parvez Haris<\/strong> of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dmu.ac.uk\/home.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\"><strong>De Montfort University<\/strong><\/a>, who moderated the second day. He reiterated the significance of building bridges between scientific research and practical implementation, and the importance of nurturing the next generation of food safety leaders who understand both.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3723\" data-end=\"4141\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\">By the end of the Symposium, one message rang clear: the future of food safety in Africa depends on sustained partnerships, investment in local capacities, and trust in science.
