Sub-project Title:

Improving the perishable food value chain of West Nile region of Uganda with climate-smart low-cost innovations to enhance food and nutrition security

Funding Awarded:

€ 60,000

Location of the sub-project:

West Nile region of Uganda

Global food production is increasing, yet over one-third is lost postharvest, threatening food security and fuelling climate change. Low-income, food-deficit countries contribute 22% of global food loss, disproportionately affecting vulnerable groups, particularly women engaged in perishable produce trade. Inadequate cold chains are a major driver, causing losses of 526 million tons annually and reducing smallholder incomes by 15%. Uganda lags in cold storage capacity; for instance, Arua City had no bulk cold facility in 2024 despite evidence that refrigeration could save 144 million tons globally. This study aims to (1) assess the magnitude, causes, and costs of postharvest losses in perishable value chains in West Nile, (2) co-create and test low-input off-grid preservation technologies using local resources, and (3) train and equip vendors to adopt these innovations. Findings will guide policies and investments for food security, resilience, and SDG 12 achievement.

Kyambogo University (KYU) was established with the main aim of promoting and advancing knowledge and development of skills in Science, Technology and Education and such other fields having regards for quality, equity, progress and transformation of society.

The University that now sits on Banda Hill is one of Uganda’s largest public Universities established by the Universities and Other Tertiary Institutions Act 2001 and the Universities and Other Tertiary institutions (Establishment of Kyambogo University) instruments of 2003. It is a merger of the former Uganda Polytechnic Kyambogo (UPK), the Institute of Teacher Education, Kyambogo (ITEK), and the Uganda National Institute of Special Education (UNISE).
