Sub-project Title:

Innovations in Informal Markets for Safe Vegetables in Tanzania

Funding Awarded:

€ 59,999.04

Location of the sub-project:

Tanzania

This project proposes a market-based intervention model that combines postharvest best practices and branding to improve the safety and quality of fresh vegetables in the Kilimanjaro region of Tanzania. The project will pilot the model and assess farmers’ and traders’ adoption of good postharvest handling and management practices, and the effect on income, food safety and consumer demand. Barriers and opportunities for embedding suitable postharvest technologies within the institutional environment will be examined. Key outcomes are enhanced awareness, knowledge and adoption of good postharvest practices among traders and farmers, reduced microbial contamination in fresh vegetables and wash water along the value chain, increased demand for safe and quality vegetables and increased interest among small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and local authorities to scale food safety technologies.
