Sub-project Title:

FungaFrass Bio: Scaling Fungus-Rich Biofertilizers for Safer and Resilient Informal Vegetable Value Chains

Funding Awarded:

€ 60,000

Location of the sub-project:

Multi-county demonstration

Mzuri Organics, a Kenya-based startup, pioneers sustainable bio-inputs to enhance food safety and cut chemical use in vegetable production. Its flagship, FungaFrass Bio, enriches vermicompost-frass blends with beneficial fungi and microbial consortia (Trichoderma, mycorrhizae, mycelium, actinomycetes) that regenerate soils, boost crop immunity, and suppress pathogens. In a 12-month multi-county demonstration across Kakamega, Bungoma, Kisumu, Siaya, and Vihiga, 10 demo gardens with paired controls will showcase how insect and worm-based inputs and precision soil management can reduce pesticide use by over 70% and ensure >90% compliance with national/EU MRLs. At least 100 farmers will be engaged, with monitoring of residues, yields, adoption, and economics. Outcomes include safer produce, higher farmer margins (>35%), and a scalable youth and women-led distribution model aligned with FS4Africa’s mission.

Gare Holdings Ltd-Mzuri organics

Gare Holdings Ltd – Mzuri Organics is a Kenyan enterprise developing circular, regenerative agriculture solutions that convert organic waste into biofertilizers and soil health inputs. The company combines Black Soldier Fly bioconversion, vermicomposting, and microbial soil technologies to support sustainable crop production and reduce reliance on synthetic inputs.
Working with farmer networks and research partners, Mzuri Organics promotes soil restoration, improved farm productivity, and safer food production. Through the FS4Africa programme, the company is implementing the FungaFrass Bio project, which demonstrates soil-health-based approaches to reducing pesticide dependence and improving food safety in vegetable value chains.
