Sub-project Title:
FORMULATION DEVELOPMENT AND EVALUATION OF A NOVEL PESTICIDE-OILS PELLET FOR SUSTAINABLE POST-HARVEST PRESERVATION IN SUB-SAHARAN AFRICA
Funding Awarded:
€ 60,000
Location of the sub-project:
Namibia
This project validates PEST-OILS, an innovative, biodegradable controlled-release pellet that uses essential oils (clove, ginger, African pepper, and turmeric) to replace harmful synthetic pesticides in grain storage. The solution directly addresses food insecurity and the high health risks associated with conventional pesticide residues prevalent in the African informal sector. PEST-OILS begins at Technology Readiness Level (TRL) 4, with a laboratory-validated formulation. The 12-month sub-project aims to advance the solution to TRL 6 through comprehensive demonstration in relevant environments, including rigorous bioassays, food safety analyses aligned with Codex standards, mandatory field testing with at least 10 smallholder farmers, and a public demonstration event engaging at least 30 stakeholders. Expected outcomes include a significant reduction in post-harvest losses (currently up to 40%), enhanced food safety and grain quality, and the establishment of a clear market-entry roadmap detailing the financial viability and scaling potential of the African informal sector.
University of Namibia
The University of Namibia (UNAM) is Namibia’s largest public university and a key hub for higher education and research. Established on August 31, 1992, shortly after Namibia gained independence in 1990, the university was founded to increase access to higher education and develop skilled human resources for the country’s growth. UNAM’s main campus is in Windhoek, in the Khomas Region, and the institution operates around 12 campuses and regional centers throughout the country, including Ongwediva, Rundu, Katima Mulilo, and Henties Bay.
The university has expanded significantly and now enrolls over 30,000 students with more than 2,000 staff members, making it the largest higher education institution in Namibia. UNAM offers a wide variety of undergraduate and graduate programs through several faculties, including Agriculture and Natural Resources, Education, Humanities and Social Sciences, Law, Engineering and Information Technology, Economics and Management Sciences, and Science. It also includes specialized schools like Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, and Public Health.
A major milestone was the founding of the School of Medicine in 2009, allowing Namibia to train its own doctors locally, with the first graduates in 2016. UNAM also conducts research in key areas such as agriculture, health sciences, environmental studies, and social development, often focusing on Namibia’s natural resources and biodiversity. Through teaching, research, partnerships, and community outreach, UNAM makes a significant contribution to national development and continues to produce professionals who support Namibia’s social and economic growth.
