SafeSoko™ – Digital Food Safety Verification for Informal Grain Markets

Funding Awarded:

€ 60,000

Location of the sub-project:

Western Kenya (Homa Bay & Migori Counties)

SafeSoko™ is a digital food safety verification platform designed to address mycotoxin contamination in informal grain markets. The solution combines rapid aflatoxin screening tools with a mobile-based traceability interface that enables traders and millers to test, record, and communicate grain safety in real time.

Under FS4Africa OC1, SafeSoko will be tested with informal sector actors in Western Kenya, engaging at least 10 participants and demonstrating results to over 30 stakeholders. The project will advance from a validated prototype (TRL4) to a market-ready pilot (TRL6), strengthening transparency, reducing toxin exposure, and improving consumer trust in informal food markets.
