The “FoodSafety4Africa” project officially launched!

Sustainable practices and innovative solutions for a safer food future

The kick-off meeting for the groundbreaking “FoodSafety4Africa” (FS4Africa) project convened in Ibadan, Nigeria, heralding a pivotal moment in the quest to enhance food safety standards across the African continent.

Designed to combat the pressing food safety issues plaguing Africa, FS4Africa focuses on bolstering the resilience of local food systems. Led by a consortium of esteemed partners spanning Africa and Europe, the project aims to revolutionise the landscape of food safety by targeting key challenges prevalent in the region.

At the heart of the FS4Africa initiative lies a multifaceted approach, addressing a spectrum of concerns ranging from mycotoxin contamination to microbial threats such as Escherichia coli and the pervasive issue of food adulteration. With a dedicated emphasis on the informal sector, the EU-funded project attempts to uplift local markets, thereby fortifying food security and facilitating regional trade.

The recent kick-off meeting in Ibadan marked the commencement of a collaborative journey towards transformative change. Deliberations at the meeting underscored the project’s commitment to harnessing a diverse array of expertise, tools, and strategies. Through policy development, implementation of existing regulations, and the integration of digital innovations, FS4Africa aims to propel the informal sector towards a status of heightened reliability and transparency.

“Food safety resonates deeply within every community. The quality of our food directly impacts our well-being, livelihoods, and economic progress. Despite the vital role played by the informal sector in supplying a significant portion of Africa’s food, and extending its reach beyond the continent, it is plagued by numerous food safety challenges”, said Dr. Titilayo Falade, the project coordinator of the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA). Regarding the inaugural meeting, she expressed enthusiasm, stating, “The FoodSafety4Africa project has commenced with a productive three-day meeting, facilitating meaningful interactions among partners, and laying the groundwork for project implementation. Coordinated by the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture, this project is a consortium of 16 partners from Africa, the Americas, and Europe, united in a mission to tackle food safety issues in the informal sector. With unwavering determination and collective expertise, I am confident that this consortium will make a profound impact on the continent.”

As the project unfolds, it will build upon the foundations laid by previous and ongoing EU initiatives, fostering collaboration with esteemed institutions such as the Joint Research Centre and the Knowledge Centre for Global Food and Nutrition Security.

One of the key aspects of the FS4Africa project is its interdisciplinary approach, which combines insights from different fields to ensure the well-being of people, animals, and the environment. By adopting holistic approaches, the project aims to ensure sustainable development and meet the needs of future generations.
