In a remarkable development for food safety in Africa, the FS4Africa EU project formalised a critical partnership with three local governments in Ibadan, Oyo State. The signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) at the prestigious International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) marked a new era of collaboration, bringing together key stakeholders to address pressing food safety challenges in the region.
The ceremony was graced by Dr. Kenton Dashiell, Deputy Director General, Partnerships for Delivery at IITA, Honorable Akinwole Akinleye, Chairman of Akinyele Local Government, and Honorable Emmanuel Oluwole Alawode, Chairman of Ibadan South-East Local Government. Their presence underscored the significance of aligning international expertise with local leadership to create impactful, sustainable solutions for food safety issues that affect public health and economic stability. Dr. Titilayo Falade, FS4Africa Project Coordinator, Mrs. Olumodupe Banwo, FS4Africa Project Manager, and other key stakeholders also attended the event.
The partnership, guided by the terms of the MoU, paves the way for initiatives that enhance food safety standards, strengthen local capacities, and foster public awareness. Anchored in FS4Africa’s commitment to a multi-actor-based approach, this collaboration reflects a shared vision for a resilient food system. Parties to the MoU emphasised that improving food safety requires a blend of technical innovation and local insights, ensuring solutions are practical, culturally relevant, and sustainable.
The formalisation of this partnership is more than an agreement; it represents a unifying force in tackling food safety challenges. This milestone symbolises a vision for healthier communities, economic growth, and the establishment of policies that safeguard food from farm to fork. With the guidance of FS4Africa and the dedication of local governments, Ibadan now stands poised to lead by example, showcasing how international collaboration can drive meaningful progress in food security across Africa. This event signifies a bold step forward, not just for Ibadan but for the broader vision of FS4Africa to transform food safety systems across the continent.
